Abstract
Background: Hyperlipidemia is a known risk factor of coronary artery diease. To evaluate the degree of changes in lipid profile with body weight change, we analysed the changing pattern of lipid profile in relation to the change in body mass index for 2 years among those who showed no changes in life style patterns.

Methods: We gathered information on diet pattern, excercise, smoking, and drinking by questionnaire and interview. And then we selected 2,898 persons who showed no changes in their life style during 2 years(2002~2004). We assessed changes in their body mass index and lipid profile including HDL-Cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol, Triglyceride, Lipoprotein(a), Apolipoprotein A-I, and Apolipoprotein B, and performed correlation analysis.

Results: After 2 years of follow up, the body weight increased 1.85% in men and 0.53% in women. The lipid profile showed increasing pattern in all items checked except total cholesterol. Total cholesterol, LDL-C, TG and Apo B were positively correlated with the body weight change with significance. HDL-C, Lp(a), Apo A-I were negatively correlated with the BMI change but did not reach statistical significance.

Conclusions: Our results imply that reducing BMI to some degree also would lead to improvement in lipid profile, so it will contribute to the prevention and management of hyperlipidemia. (Korean J Health Promot Dis Prev 2006 ; 6(3) : 173~178)
